Windows Modem Diagnostic

December 5, 2007

You can check your modem using Windows Modem Diagnostic tool. If modem does not pass the Windows Diagnostics, RingCentral will not “see” that modem.

1. Close all communication applications.
2. Click Start Menu -> Settings -> Control Panel
3. Double-click Modems icon. You‘ll see Modem Properties dialog.
4. Select Diagnostics tab.
5. Highlight the COM port where your modem is installed.
6. Press More Info… You should get one of these results:

A. More Info dialog with commands and responses.
B. Empty More Info dialog or no response.
C. Error message (typically “Can‘t Open Port”).

7. If you have more than one modem in the list, repeat steps 5-6 for each modem.

Result A normally means your modem is installed and working.

Result B: (Windows queried the modem but received no response)

Check that modem is turned on and connected properly to the computer (if external modem)
Reinstall modem driver

Result C: (Windows is not able to access the port)

Check that all communication programs are closed
Check that modem is turned on and connected properly to the computer (if external modem)
Reinstall modem driver
Check that there are no hardware conflicts in the Device Manager
It is essential that IRQ and I/O addresses are configured correctly

Contact your modem/computer manufacturer for further assistance in this matter.

If you see two different modems on the same COM port, it means you have two different drivers installed. It could be because you use different PC card modems in your notebook PC or because different drivers and/or modems were installed in the past. We recommend removing driver for a modem which is not used.
